Lucena derives its name from a Hebrew word meaning "may God save us" and was originally almost exclusively inhabited by Jews. It was home to one of the richest trade industries as well as great names of Jewish scholars including Maimonides. Its Jewish population increased as it accepted Jews fleeing persecution, seeking safety in this city where the elected Rabbi was also a reigning judge in civil and criminal court. Today, Lucena is most known for its Easter ceremony where antique sculptures are carried throughout the city.
