Anna Well and Medicinal Bath

Only a single public bath survived the devastating Great Flood of 1879, thus, city leaders decided to have a new one built in order to satisfy arising local needs. A design contest was soon issued that the renowned Budapest-based architects Adolf Láng and Antal Steinhardt won.

The New Synagogue

The New Synagogue of Szeged is considered as the masterpiece of the famous Jewish architect Lipót Baumhorn; it is the second largest synagogue in Hungary and the fourth largest one in the world. It is still a functioning one, being the third synagogue of the community.

World War I Memorial

All communities intended to erect a monument to commemorate their war heroes during WWI and especially in the interwar era. Such was the case in the Jewry of Szeged who were the first in town to erect memorial boards for their war heroes on the wall of the Old Synagogue in 1924. Another WWI memorial place was soon erected in the Jewish cemetery in 1933, remembering the heroic deeds and sacrifice of Jewish soldiers in the Great War. Nevertheless, these monuments also meant to express their loyalty to the Hungarian Nation. The monument was inaugurated on 29 October 1933; a large number of people regardless of religious denomination attended the ceremony: the leadership of the city, battalions connected to Szeged, school students and representatives of the local religious communities. The 2 meter tall white stone sarcophagus was made from public donations, and is the work of Jewish graphical artist and sculptor Ármin Tardos-Taussig. Several rows of small marble boards commemorate the names of 116 fallen Jewish war heroes from Szeged in the nearby plot.

The Pick Family

Pick salami is a word famous trademark that was introduced by Mark Pick in 1883. He had three sons: Jenő, a salami producer, Móric, an architect, and Lajos (Petri), a sculptor. He was an honoured member of the Jewish community as well as that of the city. He financially supported railway development, building the New Synagogue, local schools and organizations. During this walk, you will learn about the family story, will see their dwelling places, and will learn about their special winter salami product, the first factory, and a number of palaces built by Móric who fell victim to the Shoah.

Walk in the Old Jewish District

During this two-hour-long tour, I will introduce you the history of Jews in Szeged from the end of the 18th century until the present days by showing and visiting their homes, palaces, schools and synagogues. You will visit both the Old and the New Synagogue that is the fourth largest one in the world, built in 1903. The building underwent a complete external renovation in 2017 when its Biblical garden was also restored.

The Jewish Cemetery

It is the final resting place of several famous local residents, such as Chief Rabbi Lipot Löw who was the first representative of the Hungarian moderate reformed (Neolog) movement. His son Chief Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Löw, who was said to be the most scholarly rabbi of his time, was a botanist who conceptualized the gorgeous stained-glass windows of the New Synagogue and the plants of the Biblical garden around it based on his internationally famous work entitled The Flora der Juden. You will see the tombs of journalists, writers, musicians, painters, photographers, industrialists and factory owners who played a decisive role in the life and development of Szeged.

Hági Udvar

Hagi Udvar is a legendary restaurant among the locals with a history dating back to the 19th century. The first theatre in the city was opened in 1856 and after a flood, the building was renovated by the city and sold to Haggenmacher Brewery in 1896 to become a beer hall. The restaurant has gained popularity since the 30s, and has been a center of nightlife and a meeting place for intellectuals. Among others, poet Miklós Radnóti, comedian Géza Boncz, opera singer József Gregor, actress Éva Ruttkai, singer Pál Szécsi, actress Hilda Gobbi, actor Zoltán Latinovits, singer Margit Bangó have dined at Hagi Udvar. The restaurant has expanded several times and eventually permanently closed in the mid-1990s. In the spring of 2018, young entrepreneurs, Dr. Tibor Farkas Molnár and Dr. Gyula Gálosi, reopened the restaurant and today it is once again a lively meeting and lounging area. They serve a variety of home-made dishes with local Hungarian flavors as well as modern cuisine. There are also private rooms for family and corporate events.

Hungary Exhibit Honors Architect Lipot Baumhorn

(JHE) — Lipót Baumhorn, the most prolific synagogue architect in pre-WW2 Europe, is being honored with an open-air exhibit in Szeged, the city that is home to his masterpiece — the monumental domed New Synagogue, dedicated in 1903. At the same time, a beautifully illustrated new book — downloadable for free — celebrates the synagogue’s spectacular stained glass windows and documents their creation by the artist Mánó Róth in collaboration with Baumhorn and Szeged’s chief rabbi, Immanuel Löw.

Tiszavirág Szeged

The Tiszavirág Szeged is a unique place in Hungary where design and tradition in gastronomy and architecture come together. The Balassa House had been a part of the great Balassa estate, including Kistelek and Sándorfalva, before becoming state-owned. Salamon Politzer a famous Jewish goldsmith built it in 1858-59. The Balassa House is one of those romantic-style buildings from the 1860s, where little is known about those Jewish craftsmen who demonstrated splendid taste and knowledge in architecture, applied arts and decoration. The building’s balcony is volute, and the stair’s bannister reflects renaissance influence. As for its function, it used to be a commercial-civil house, where other famous Jewish citizens like Soma Bak and Lajos Pollák used to practise law at the beginning of the 1950s. The building became state-owned in 1952. Tiszavirág is a wonderfully renovated historical townhouse wich stands in the center of the historical Jewish quater of Szeged. The four-start hotel has 12 rooms, a bar, restaurant, café, conference room and SPA. A warm and welcoming place where you will immediately feel at home no matter if you are on a business trip or on holiday.
